Radiation Oncology
Overview
Advanced, Precise, and Compassionate Cancer Care:
Welcome to the Department of Radiation Oncology at KIRAN MULTI SUPER SPECIALITY HOSPITAL, SURAT. We combine state-of-the-art technology with a patient-centered approach to deliver highly effective and personalized cancer treatment. Our mission is to cure and healing, using the power of radiation to fight cancer while prioritizing pt. safety and quality of life. In addition to these special techniques, we offer highly specialized services for patient care and comfort:
Understanding Radiation Oncology :
Radiation Oncology is a medical specialty that uses high-energy radiation to damage cancer cells and stop them from growing and dividing. Radiation is used alone or in combination with other therapies like surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. Approximately 50-60% of all cancer patients will receive radiation therapy at some point during their treatment journey.
- Cure Cancer (Curative Intent): Completely eliminate a tumor.
- Control Cancer (Adjuvant/Neoadjuvant): Prevent cancer from returning after surgery or shrink a tumor before surgery.
- Ease Symptoms (Palliative Care): Relieve pain and other symptoms caused by advanced cancer, improving a patient's comfort and quality of life.
Understanding Radiation Therapy:
Radiation therapy works by aiming powerful, precisely focused beams of energy (like X-rays) at cancer cells. This energy damages the genetic material (DNA) of the cancer cells, making it impossible for them to grow or multiply. The damaged cells die and are naturally eliminated by the body. Our team uses sophisticated planning systems to target the tumor with maximum accuracy, ensuring that the surrounding healthy tissues and organs are spared as much as possible.
Infrastructure
Our State-of-the-Art Techniques & Technology: At Kiran Hospital, our Radiation Oncology dept. Offers treatment with 3 world class machines
- ETHOS Linear Accelerator (Al based Software )-1st in INDIA HALCYON Linear Accelerator
- True Beam STX Linear Accelerator
- Brachytherapy using Radioactive İridium.
- Dedicated CT Simulator machine with respiratory Gating technology integrated.
- We are proud to offer the following latest advanced TECHNIQUES on above machines to ensure every patient receives the best possible care.
- Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): This advanced technique allows us to "sculpt" the radiation beams to match the exact shape of the tumor, delivering different doses to different parts of the tumor while avoiding healthy tissue.
- Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT): A faster and even more precise method, VMAT delivers radiation in a continuous arc around the patient, significantly reducing treatment time.
- Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT): We use real-time imaging (like CT scans or X-rays) just before each treatment session to verify the tumor's position and make micro-adjustments, accounting for daily changes in your body. This ensures unparalleled accuracy.
- Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) & Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT): These non-invasive techniques deliver extremely high doses of radiation to small, well-defined tumors in just one to five sessions. It is an effective alternative to surgery for certain cancers, especially in the brain, lung, liver, and spine.
- Brachytherapy (Internal Radiation): In this procedure, a radioactive source is placed directly inside or next to the tumor. This allows for a high dose of radiation to be delivered to the cancer while minimizing exposure to the rest of the body.
Service Offered
The Patient Journey-What to Expect: We are with pt. every step of the way for carefully planned and coordinated treatment by our trained & expert team.
- Consultation: Pt. Will meet a Radiation Oncologist who will review medical history, perform an examination, and discuss if radiation therapy is the right choice for the pt.
- Simulation and Planning: Next, Pt. will undergo a planning CT scan. This sean helps our team of physicists and dosimetrists create a customized 3D treatment plan tailored specifically to pt. anatomy and tumor.
- Treatment Sessions: The treatments are typically given daily, Monday through Friday, for several weeks. Each session is painless and usually lasts only 15-20 minutes, much like getting an X-ray. Our skilled Radiation Therapists will ensure that the pts. are comfortable throughout the process.
- Ongoing Care and Follow-up: During treatment course, regular check-ins with oncologist and nurse to monitor progress and manage any side effects. After treatment is complete, we will schedule follow-up appointments to track recovery and long-term health.
Our Multidisciplinary Team of Experts:
The Pt. care is managed by a dedicated team of highly trained professionals working together to design and deliver the treatment plan.
- Radiation Oncologists: Specialist doctors who lead the team, prescribe the treatment, and oversee the care.
- Medical Physicists & Dosimetrists: Scientists who ensure the equipment is working correctly and calculate the precise radiation dose for customised treatment plan.
- Radiation Therapists: Technologists who position pts. for treatment and operate the radiation machines.
- Oncology Nurses: Nurses who provide support, manage side effects, and answer questions throughout your journey.
